What is a house church?

A house church is a small community of believers who gather regularly in a home, café, or any ordinary space to worship, study the Bible, pray, eat together and care for one another like family. It is not a building, a program or a denomination — it is a living expression of the church as a people.

At VLAM Sydney, we use the house church model because it makes discipleship personal. In a smaller setting, every person is known, every voice can be heard and every gift can be exercised. The goal is not to fill seats, but to raise courageous disciples of Jesus who make more disciples. Many people today long for deeper connection than a weekly service can easily provide. A house church creates room for real relationship: honest questions, shared meals, accountability and life-on-life discipleship.

• ✦Everyone is known. With typically 6–12 people, no one slips through the cracks. Members share struggles, celebrate breakthroughs and walk through life together.
• ✦Everyone participates. Rather than watching a few leaders perform, each person contributes through prayer, worship, teaching, encouragement or practical service.
• ✦Discipleship happens in real life. Faith is worked out Monday to Saturday, not only on Sunday. Members disciple one another in the rhythms of work, family and neighbourhood.

A traditional church often gathers dozens, hundreds or thousands of people for a shared worship service led by a trained team. This has great value for proclamation, worship and resourcing the wider body of Christ. A house church does not replace that; it complements it with a different emphasis.

At VLAM Sydney we value both expressions. Our house churches meet weekly, then join larger celebration gatherings every two months to worship, share testimonies and take communion together.

There is no rigid script. A typical VLAM house church gathering in Sydney includes:

• ✦Welcome and food. Sharing a meal or a cup of tea sets the tone for family, not formality.
• ✦Worship and prayer. Simple, participatory singing and prayer for one another and the city.
• ✦Bible discussion. Reading Scripture together, asking questions and applying it to everyday life.
• ✦Encouragement and accountability. Sharing what God is doing and committing to next steps of obedience.
• ✦Mission. Praying for friends, neighbours and colleagues who do not yet know Jesus.

A house church is for anyone who wants to follow Jesus in genuine community. You might especially thrive if you:

The house church is the family; one-on-one discipleship is the engine room. Every member is encouraged to be in a discipling relationship where they read the Bible, pray, confess sin, set goals and obey what God says.

This is how Jesus worked: he invested deeply in a few (Peter, James and John), who then made disciples who made disciples.
